UN to address the threat invasive species pose to world ecosystems
As climate change alters temperature and precipitation patterns around the world, the United Nations is reporting the threat posed by invasive species to be rising. Scientists and United Nations officials are calling on participants at December's climate change conference in Copenhagen to agree to action to strengthen their ecosystems and to protect biodiversity. Climate change may increase spread of invasives
Scientists at the U.S Forest Service Pacific NW Research Station say that if the projected global warming trends are realized, one of the most aggressive invasive species, tamarisk (tamarix spp.) may increase its habitat. In August, the Invasive Species Advisory Committee issued recommendations regarding biofuel programs. Among the invasive species world however, many are worried that these aggressive plants will escape and wreak havoc on the natural landscape.
